Traveling in America and Canada We traveled to the West Coast of U.S. and Canada from on August 9 to 23 in 2003. |
From Narita airport to Portland in Oregon via San Francisco A big typhoon hit Japan on August 9. We had very strong wind, but at last our plane punctually took off. |
You can't see our plane clearly because of heavy rain. | Night was very short because our plane was heading the sun. | After we slept a little, dawn came. |
A Very Strict Security Check We knew that security was very strict in U.S. this time and we had to take off our shoes. But to tell the truth, I had a special knife made in Switzerland in my bag. When we transferred San Francisco to Portland, in front of the gate a lot of people lined up for a check (inspection). On a board it was written that those who had knives, screwdrivers, and so on were criminals! First we took off our shoes and we safely passed a metal inspection. From now on terrible! We each one raised our hands and I showed even a reverse of my belt and an officer checked our belongings in our bags. Finally an officer found out a knife in my bag! I thought I had to get into a prison, but I promised to leave a knife and at last I was released. We were able to get on a plane on schedule. We were relieved! |
Portland Sightseeing A friend in Portland drove us to around here. |
This dam is built in the Columbia river and fish-keeping pond is, too. | Fish climbs up a fish ladder easily | You can observe the view into a fish ladder under the ground. |
Hilton Portland Hotel We stayed in the Hilton Hotel with a suite room thanks to a friend. |
This is the Hilton Hotel in the middle of the city. | This is the other room different from a bedroom. We didn't use this room except for breakfast with a room service. | This is a gorgeous bed room, but we took off the quilt and we used a spare blanket because it was very hot. |
